Motorcycle Helmets: What is a proper fit?

Motorcycle Helmets: What is a proper fit?

Your motorcycle helmet: you wear it every time you ride, and it's an extension of your style; both on the bike and off. But what is a proper fit?

When we fit customers for a motorcycle helmet in person, we look for a couple of notable things:

  • Is the helmet snug? A snug fit in a motorcycle helmet is generally indicated by squished “chipmunk cheeks,” and by the motorcycle helmet not moving around on the wearer’s head; both side to side and front to back.
  • Is the helmet comfortable? A comfortable motorcycle helmet will not have any pressure points in the crown, temple, or forehead areas. While cheek pads will break in over time for less of a squish, the impact absorbing foam of the helmet will not, making a small pressure point turn into a nasty hotspot on a long ride!

The first motorcycle helmet you try on may not be the perfect one for you, and we recommend trying on as many as you need to when shopping in store. Different manufacturers can have a broad range of fits, and where an Arai motorcycle helmet might feel uncomfortable a Shoei helmet may feel just right.

Some motorcycle helmet manufacturers even have different shapes to accommodate riders’ heads. Arai helmets come in Round, Intermediate Oval, and Long Oval shapes to fit many different riders; and the new Schuberth C5 helmet has swappable interior pads to change its head shape. Most other motorcycle helmet manufacturers, like Shoei, come in an intermediate oval shape; but many manufacturers offer different thicknesses of cheek pad to fit different riders.

We offer dozens of styles of motorcycle helmet to suit the needs of almost any rider, and we are happy to help fit customers for the most appropriate helmet for their needs.
